[EBB] #21 - Course building (part 1): Outlining challenge lessons
Hey Jacky!
You’ve got your challenge concept.
You’ve written a simple sales page... or a series of emails to send to your list.
You’ve set up some tech, including the checkout and the sequence in Kit (or your email provider).
You've started selling your challenge and it's working!
"Oh sht! Now what!?"*
If your challenge starts selling, you've got to actually start writing the daily lessons that will guide your customers through the challenge.
But don't stress because you literally only need to be a few hours ahead of your customers (especially when it comes to Skill-Building Challenge email lessons where you're not teaching a Step by Step Method).
Today I’m going to show you the exact system I use to outline and write challenge lessons.
Per the usual, it's pretty simple.
And what you'll learn about outlining challenges, will also come in handy later when you're building other types of courses.
So this is basically part one of "how to build a course".
The EDC Method for Outlining Challenges
This comes directly from my Email Delivered Courses product (discount code for EBB customers applied automatically), and it’s the system I’ve used to outline every challenge and course I’ve ever created.
The process has three simple steps:
- Step 1: Brain dump 5-10 broad “modules” or topic areas
- Step 2: Add short bullet points under each module for the “core topics”
- Step 3: Add action steps under each core topic
Think in topic areas first, then let those naturally become individual emails.
Don’t try to organize by days or weeks initially. Just get all the ideas out in logical topic groups.
Step 1: List 5-10 broad modules
Start by brain dumping the main areas someone needs to cover to complete your challenge successfully.
These aren’t days or weeks - they’re broad topic areas.
Don’t overthink this step. Just brain dump the major areas someone would need to master.
Step 2: Add core topics under each module
Now take each module and break it down into specific topics that need to be covered.
Think of these as “sub-headings in a chapter” - the individual things you’ll actually teach.
This is where you start to see what will become individual emails, but you’re still not thinking in days.
Step 3: Add actual steps
For each core topic, add 1-sentence bullet points describing how that topic gets done or completed.
This is where you capture the specific steps, common issues, and practical details.
How your outline becomes daily emails
Once you have your complete outline, here’s how you turn it into actual challenge emails:
Start by thinking of your core topics as one email lesson.
Each bullet point under your modules becomes one potential email.
Looking at our breathwork example:
- Wake up breathing = Email
- Coffee replacement breath = Email
- 10 minute energy boost = Email
- Concentration breathing = Email
- Pre-meeting breathing = Email
I’m NOT numbering each email, I’m just thinking of those as potential lessons/emails in the challenge.
Then I make simple adjustments if needed:
- Combine simple techniques: If two techniques are quick (5 minutes each) and related, put them in one email lesson. “Pre-meeting breathing” + “Study session breathing” becomes “Focus Breathing for Work.”
- Split complex techniques: If one technique is complicated or has multiple steps, split it across 2-3 emails.
But honestly?
Keep it simple for your first challenge.
Real example of a challenge lesson
I’ve created a Google Doc with an actual challenge I ran (the lesson itself).
The challenge was called the "Email-a-Day Challenge".
I ran this challenge for 5 days only, and it was $7 to join.
You’ll see how straightforward it is.
I'm calling it "advanced" because, now-a-days, I'd just put all the training into the email lesson itself instead of sending people to a separate Google Doc.
Technical note: How this connects to your Kit setup
Remember the empty email sequence you created in Kit? Your outline directly maps to that sequence:
- Welcome email: Overview of the challenge ahead (pulls from your entire outline)
- Daily emails: One core topic per email
- Wrap-up email: Next steps and transition to your other products
You’ll be writing these emails 1-2 days ahead of when they send, using your outline as the roadmap but adapting based on customer feedback and questions (if you get any).
ACTION ITEM
Create your challenge outline:
- Open Apple Notes and create a new note titled “[Your Challenge Name] Outline”
- Brain dump 5-8 broad modules your challenge will cover (fewer modules = more focused or shorter challenge)
- List 2-4 specific techniques or topics under each module (these become your daily emails)
- Add action steps under each core topic (what you’ll write in each lesson)
- Count your total techniques – you should have 7-28 total, perfect for a 1-4 week challenge
- Review the challenge example lesson in the Google Doc above for inspiration and to see how simple effective challenges actually are
Your outline should take 30-45 minutes to create. Any longer and you’re overthinking it.
Remember: This outline serves your Email Based Business goals of getting buyers on your list and learning what they really want to buy from you.
It’s not about creating the perfect challenge – it’s about creating a profitable testing ground for your bigger products (flagship, pillar, coaching/consulting, etc.).
— Derek
P.S.
The biggest mistake I see people make with challenge outlines is overcomplicating them.
Check out that real example in the Google Doc – you’ll be surprised how simple the actual challenge is.
Simple is better.
